The Smyth Range is best accessed from Scamper Torrent or Headlong Spur out of the Waitaha. The Scamper Torrent hut book has a good route description, watch out for the fishers. Once on the ridgeline, travel is relatively straightforward on a wide shingle pathway. The southern aspects do hold onto snow late & still has some small glaciers.
