This is a gravel path but 90-95% of it you can choose to run on the grass next to the path, with no more than 1km involving footpath/road
Dogs are allowed on lead and the path is also bike friendly, wind gusts are noticeable along the coast, great resistance training! Take a headlamp as there is no lighting around. It is very hard to get lost because the track is easy to follow.
This is an out and back, theoretically you could start at any point as long as you cover the section twice just your elevation will be in a different order.
Start in the cul-de-sac outside Cottonsofts, at the eastern end of Waiouru Road, Highbrook. Follow the path till you get to a carpark (approx 1.4km). Here you have 200m of footpath till you pop back on the next bit of path. Follow the path all the way till you get towards the lights heading towards the motorway where you will come to a fork section - head off right to loop 200m around up to the lights.
Cross over Highbrook Drive with this small road section across to the wooden gate (gate 1). Head up the hill through gate 2 onto gate 3 and out of gate 4. Head across the grass and go right to head up this small road section towards the pylons, past the metal gate, around the pylon turning left where you will be back on the path.
Follow this path and at the next fork head right to go down and around behind the pond. Once around go right and follow this up and out to Pukekiwiriki Place (T intersection with Underwood Street). This is your turn around point.
Turn around and head back the way you came. Once reaching the pond stay in front of it this time (only difference to the path out). At the bottom of the hill across Highbrook Drive take the same small loop (left and around 200m, no cheating on taking the shorter path right in front of you!). From here it is all the way back the same way with the 200m footpath carpark section to pop back on the last section.
This track has beautiful views with the sunrises and sunsets and once dark the lights glistening over the water. If you look around you will see Mt Wellington and get a good view of the skytower too. So much beauty for a busy industrial area!
Waterway edge, views of Mt Wellington and the sky tower, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Lots of bird life (Pukeko, Grey heron, Kingfisher etc) and if at night you will see rabbits and the odd possum. Other interests include dogs on lead are accepted and bike path friendly for running with children/partners on bikes.

Drive to the eastern end of Waiouru Road, Highbrook and park on the road. To access here from Highbrook drive turn onto Business Parade North follow it to the roundabout and turn right. There is a bus route that runs near by.

Easy trail to run. Handy location and very flat path to and fro. Great for new runners.

Ran it today...not much to say about it really. Nice compacted gravel trails around the estuary. Nice for a change but very easy going.
