This is a great loop, lots of technical running on routes and rocks, follow the orange markers and you will be fine. The track climbs through native bush and is fairly easy to navigate with 2 creek crossings.

A few river crossing that are dry during summer but flowing after heavy rainfall

Two toilets located in the field next to the carpark.

You can park before the gate to Aongate Lodge and use the walkway

Very patchy.

First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

There is water at the lodge before you start the loop

This may be hazardous after heavy rain due to the creek crossings

Trail Reviews

Brilliant trail!! Rooty, gnarly, technical.and hilly. Very reminiscent of old school Waitakeres. Really.enjoyed it

Beautiful, lush trail. Plenty of fun roots through the first few ks so make sure you're lifting you're feet, finishing with some easy flowing downhill. I didn't have time to visit the swimming hole, but did very much enjoy splashing through the stream crossing as a consolation.

Beautiful trail, lots of roots at the start but the last 2kms are more fun and less 'rooty'. Added on the small loop after doing the long loop which gave me another 20mins on the legs. The water hole is great to cool off afterwards too!

Nice enough trail but lots of tree roots which make for slow going. You can easily extend the run by about 2.5km by running out to swimming hole and back at the end of the run or connecting up to North South Track and running as long as you like.
