From the carpark by Planet Bike, look over the road and to the right, Fern Drive starts on the right hand side of the Waiariki Forestry Campus. Head onto this forestry road and follow it for about 1.5 Km to the intersection with Long Drive Road, turn left onto Long Drive and follow it down the hill for about 1.2km where you will come to an open area with the sound of running water. Look to the right for the entry to an unnamed trail and follow that as it winds its way around a small lake... plenty of photo ops here. around the back it crosses a small stream and climbs to a grassy forestry road, turn left here.
This road winds along pretty clearly for just under 1km to where it climbs back onto Fern Drive. Turn left an head up the hill - looking to your left straight away for another unmarked track. Head onto that track, it's a locals track so not marked at all but reasonably obvious.
Follow this for about 500m and it comes onto a grassy overgrown forestry access road. Turn left on this and enjoy some fabulous running on a soft springy surface for about 700m watching all the time for some orange paint marks on the trees to your right. When you find them, hop off the forestry track onto the orange marked track and followed the painted orange dots and arrows through to where the track joins the Black Track (a much more obvious and well used track), turn left here and follow as it progresses from a grassy track through to Forestry Road.
At around 7km you will get to an intersection, turn left onto Long Drive and after about 300m there is another unmarked (but obvious) track off to the right. Follow this, taking care at the wee log bridge and enjoy some more basic back to nature trail right through to another forestry track (Poplar Ave), turn left here and follow it right through to the road opposite the mill. Cross the road to the path on the other side, turn left and head back to your car.
Lovely wee hidden lake. Trail that is almost unused.

Moderate.
Because several of the trails are unmarked, it is recommended that you download the course to your watch, or, at the very least, print a good size map and take it with you.
Very patchy.
Waterproof leggings, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Windproof jacket, Gloves, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map
Nothing really drinkable on the course.
A bit slippery in the wet but definitely doable.
Windfall on much of the unofficial trail, nothing major and easy to skirt.
