There are many different routes you can take on Mauao / Mount Maunganui; this one is a good route to get a lap of the base track and a summit in, going up the most popular route.

For a longer challenge on Mount Maunganui, check out The Weetbix Challenge.

Starting at the Pilot Bay boat ramp, head around the base track in a clockwise direction.

Go all the way around and after approx. 2.8km, just before the base track heads down towards the surf club and Main Beach, turn right up a set of wooden steps. These soon turn into a short set of stone steps.

After the stone steps, keep going up (Oruahine track), until you reach another set of steps and a track junction. Take the left track here, up the Waikorire track (also know as "the stairs"). This track is 50:50 track and steps.

Approx 3.9km into the run, you come to another junction; take the right track, signposted to the summit, and follow this track to the top.

From the top, go straight over, following the wide 4WD track, past a stunning lookout point, and then start descending.

Following this 4WD track all the way down. Very near the bottom, take a right off the 4WD track down a short set of steps to get back onto the base track and then back to Pilot Bay boat ramp.

This trail includes the peak Mount Maunganui (Mauao).

Stunning views across the harbour and down along the beach from the summit.

There are public toilets right at the start of this trail, at the end of Pilot Bay (The Mall), and also some at the surf club.

Plenty of free parking along Pilot Bay / The Mall although can get busy in the height of summer.
