This is a great extension to the Otawa Trig track, if you want some extra vert, or the full Otawa Trig and Otawa Lodge Loop, if you want to avoid the road.
This follows a DOC marked and reasonably well-maintained trail. Starting Otawa trig carpark on Te Puke Quarry Road, the track crosses farmland before heading into the bush, where it climbs to the trig point at 560m above sea level at about 7km.
Continue past the trig to descend a few hundred metres where you will meet a sign pointing left towards Manoeka road.
Follow this all the way down on a fun technical descent to Manoeka road trail entrance and carpark. You can then turnaround and climb back over to the start for a good amount of vert (just over 1000m in total)
This trail includes the peak Whareotetarakeho.
Great views from Otawa Trig. Some really enjoyable single track.

Easy.
All DOC track. Main place you can go wrong is sign and turnoff a few hundred metres past the Trig. Follow this sign left to descend to Manoeka road.
Generally good.
Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map
Nil. Take your own water.
Trail can get muddy after rain . Magpies can be an issue across the farmland at the start/finish during season.

I was tossing up doing this or the Otawa Lodge & Otawa Trig Loop. Despite the out and back I was happy I choose the more bush option. Great bird song on the Manoeka side!
Could start from the Manoeka road end to get the buck of the climbing done first off.

Great trail. I went after a night of rain in September and the track wasn't too muddy, only a few areas. The hills on the way back were very tough going, I had to hike a significant portion from Manoeka up to the trig. It made for a fantastic feeling once I got to the trig, knowing that it was all downhill back to the carpark!

These overlap with this trail to some degree. You may wish to combine them but please note that to qualify for FKTs on these runs you should record a separate activity for each.
