A chance here for fast forest trails and a nice touch of history on a pack track that dates back to the 1860's.
This is an easy jaunt that can break up any journey through Lewis Pass. Park up at the Lewis Summit and grab your gear. Head off the opposite direction from the St James Walkway - out past the toilet, shelter and tarn viewing area. The trail sidles fairly gently all the way down to meet the highway adjacent to the well appointed DOC campsite over the road at Deer Valley.
Retrace your steps back to the car the way you came.
Historic Rolleston Pack Track. Magnificent native beech forest

Easy track through gorgeous forest. Some sections covered by overgrown ferns and bushes. Muddy start for first 300m. All footbridges over stream crossings were washed away or had been moved away.
