The start and finish point is across the road from Number 12 Morgans Valley, you will see a shingle path that cuts between 5 boulders, from here go straight up Morgans Road to the top, you will see a R.O.W on your right and a should way in some steps have been cut into the retaining wall. There will be a sign which says Tree Hut Track about 30mtrs in you will have a choice of straight ahead or taking the track to the right, take the track that veers right and follow it up through the trees and climb over the stile.

Then turn left and follow the trail that leads to a farm gate after you have come past some rocks near the top of the Beer Bum track. Once you have gone through the farm gate continue to follow this trail, you will eventually come to an intersection that will give you the option of going down, ignore this and continue on until you come down to the end of the Morgans track.

Here turn left and follow the farm track down past the circular water trough and then follow the track up to a Fence post with the Baa Baa track sign it, this track heads up from where the Beer Bum track starts it quite a well worn track. Once you get to the top of the Baa Baa Track where it intercepts the Morgans track then turn right and follow the trail back to the top of the Beer Bum track, you will see a wooden stake on the fence indicating the cross point and there are signs on the tree's. Zoom down the Beer Bum and make sure you stop to enjoy the views and the native planting.

Cross the stile at the end of the track and the head down the hill to the next stile, cross this and then head down the track between the fence and the swale. Take care crossing the R.O.W at the end of the track as you cross you will see a single path that will take you down across a small bridge and lead you back to the start.

Note: Over winter the Morgans and Baa Baa track can get extremely muddy with the water coming down the hill, over summer this dries out and gets super hard. These tracks are maintained by local runners and mountain bikers. The land is also leased for farming sheep - these are mainly seen on the part of Morgans track from the farm gate to the Baa Baa track.

At the top of Morgans valley road you will head up the Tree Hut track, this track cuts through a planting gully which is being planted as a Tui corridor. When you come around to the Farm gate on the Morgans track you will have fantastic views of the mountains. On your descent down the Beer Bum track you will run through native bush. Also lots of side tracks off the Beer Bum track to explore.

If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.

No 9 is an empty section with plenty of parking or you can park out on Bridle Path road and walk up to the start point.

Easy.

If you get to the top of the Tree Hut track and went right instead of Left you will just end up on the Bridle Path. If you kept going up the Baa Baa track you will end up in Mt Pleasant. Most of the other track will lead you back to Morgans valley.

Perfect throughout.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Gloves, Beanie/thermal headwear, First aid kit, Cellphone, Headtorch and spare batteries

No water available anyway on the track

Parts of the Morgan, Baa Baa and Beer Bum are exposed and on Windy days can be cold. The Morgans track can get muddy in winter due to water coming down the hills and the Baa Baa track also can experience lots of mud in places but only after days of extreme rain.

The mud on wet winters day, rock dodging on parts of Morgans track especially up near the Beer Bum track turn off.

Trail Reviews

This track was in pretty good nick in October 2024. Not too overgrown, sink holes clearly visible and dry underfoot. It has the feeling of going backwards and forwards across the hillside without really going anywhere, but as I was after a short and undemanding trail in this area, it was perfect.

Overgrown track and full of sunken holes on the trail to watch out for. From the R.O.W entrance before tree hut track until the final run from Morgan's back to the finish this track is overgrown. Careful with foot placement. Oh and take an antihistamine before you attempt this in Summer. I'm not allergic to pollen but the high grasses on skin became an issue. I'd love to run this trail if it was in better nick.

Awesome track, but beware - currently the Morgan's Track section is covered with long grass and thistles that are approx knee hash and obscure the track. They also obscure potholes in the track ! My wife and I both fell, I'm laid up for a few days with badly sprained ankle. Apparently the track is not maintained by the council and relies on locals for upkeep.
Maybe it was just bad timing ? Will try again in a couple of months.

An awesome route! I didn't even know these tracks existed so it was lovely to explore them today. Lots of single track loveliness and a great mix of ups and downs!
