This is a pleasant 5km loop that connects a missing link between 2 other Trail Directory runs - Spitting Distance and North New Brighton Spit. All three of these trails will get you a full marathon if you want to extend yourself with a great varied coastal journey encompassing the Waimakariri Mounth to the Heathcote-Avon Estuary.

For the Surf's Up loop head north from the New Brighton Pier, head past the new Hot Water Salt Pools, past the old surf club and then pick up the beach access trail that takes you to the top of the dunes. From here its a sweet windy trail across the dune tops all the way to Waimari Surf Club. There's one section in the middle where you pop out into the New Brighton Club, but the trail into the dunes is obvious. At Waimari beach return to the Pier along the beach, unless its high tide then you may prefer the dunes both ways.

New Brighton Beach, New Brighton Hotpools at the start/ finish line

Pleasant short trot along the beach. What’s not to like?

Beautiful undulating walk / run along the coast, great on a sunny day!

A great gentle course for those wanting some sea breeze and sand in their shoes, can be a bit difficult on the beach return section with people who believe that their dog chasing you isn't a problem. Would also highly recommend booking a spot at the hot pools to soak in after your run.

Those dunes are hard yakka on the hammies and quads but you can really put the hammer down on the beach
