Technical Trail 101 - this is a perfect introduction to technical trail across varied terrain types for the beginner. All close to civilization with good mobile coverage. For the more experienced runner this is an opportunity for a quick blast that'll have the legs and lungs burning.
Head along the Mount Pleasant Bluffs track to the Gun Batteries, continue through them and along the Crater Rim Walkway until about the 2.2km mark, a slightly less traveled trail drops down to the right towards Lyttelton. Follow this down into the valley and then skirt along behind the housing and then climb up to rejoin Major Hornbrook track back to your start point.
Magnificent Mount Pleasant Bluffs, dripping water from overhanging rocks, WW2 gun batteries, and great views over Lyttelton harbour

Ran this Feb 2024 and so overgrown it was not only mostly unrunmable but at times hard to even find the track. I was crawling through gorse and lawyers bush. Legs are scratched to hell!

Love it! Never far from the madding crowds and yet it feels so isolated at the same time. Trails are technical yet runnable. Track is short and sweet. Easily my favourite short track in the directory :) Bonus points for taking me down a new section of trail.

Great technical trail with a lovely mix of bush and views. Bottom connecting trail is obviously quite new and needs a bit more work and planting before you could call it pretty. Definitely need to work on my goat legs for the steep climb back up the boulder strewn face to the top.

Loved this run for the easy running sections at the start to the gun emplacements followed by a more technical section down and back across a woodland track beneath the steep rock face. Climb back up to the summit road is steep. Combined it with Lyttelton Semi trail for an overdose of hill climbing.

These overlap with this trail to some degree. You may wish to combine them but please note that to qualify for FKTs on these runs you should record a separate activity for each.
