Start from the car park next to the Kahutara River.
There are a couple of stream crossings as you get started, but these can usually be done without getting your feet wet.
The track follows a well-formed 4wd track and offers fantastic views of the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges. Follow the track for about 10kms until you reach the start of the saddle. Step off the 4wd track and follow the saddle along to the end for amazing views of the valley.
Pause to take a photo before turning around and starting the descent back to the car park.
Incredible views from the end of the saddle.
