The Steadfast-Hornbrook Loop offers a scenic and moderately challenging run that combines historical landmarks with stunning coastal and hilltop views. The route takes you through Lyttelton's harbour area, past remnants of a World War II navy armament depot, and onto tracks with panoramic views.
Starting at Te Ana Marina in Lyttelton, follow the footpath along to the end of the marina, crossing the road and taking a left turn. The Graving Dock will be on your left. Continue along the path, which follows the old railway line, towards the yacht club at Charlotte Jane Quay. Behind the yacht club, the trail takes a slight incline and then down to the left, leading to Torpedo Boat Museum and Magazine Bay, a favourite swimming spot for locals.
After exploring Magazine Bay, continue up the hill to the main track. This path leads past Corsair Bay and on towards Cass Bay. Pick up the Harbour View Track, and then wind your way through to the Steadfast Reserve, where clear signage marks the start of the reserve’s main trail, through a gate on the opposite side of Governors Bay Road.
Along the way, runners will pass several brick and concrete magazines—remnants of the World War II armament depot. These structures, partially dug into the hillside, are in various states of decay, with some buildings damaged by boulders, likely from past earthquakes.
The trail continues uphill, offering sweeping views of the harbour and surrounding hills. The route is well-marked throughout, making it easy to navigate. At the top, the trail intersects with the Crater Rim Walkway. Turn right here and continue past the Canterbury Pioneer Women’s Memorial at the top of the Bridal Path, heading towards the Gondola.
Shortly after passing the Gondola, take a right turn onto the Major Hornbrook Track. Follow this track downhill, then turn left at the road onto Somes Road and onto Canterbury Street. Crossing over at Norwich Quay, follow the path through Sutton Quay Reserve joining back onto the Te Ana Walkway and returning to Te Ana Marina.
Public toilets are available at Te Ana Marina and also at Corsair Bay.

Lovely 10km loop! Not much running up through Steadfast (steep) but the rest was good.
