The entire trail is very well indicated with DOC's orange topped waratahs. From the carpark go though the small gate, making sure it's closed behind you and then follow the poles. Some small alternate trails are obvious but DOC asks visitors to keep to the marked trail. A swing bridge will keep your feet dry.
This trail includes the peak Mount Sunday.
This once obscure lump of rock in a remote river valley became world famous as the location for Edoras in the LOTR films. Besides its more recent history the rock itself is an interesting geological feature having to be extra hard to resist the passage of long-gone glaciers. This area is also habitat for rare birds, fish and plants. There are interpretation boards along the way.

I just realised I've been listed as 'trail legend' for this, thanks Strava, but I've only ever walked it!
This is one of my favourite trails to take visitors from out of town for a short easy walk.
As one of the few short "easy" trails listed here for mid-Canterbury it's worth a look. I'm giving it 5 stars because I am a LoTR fan, and the views are spectacular.
My only very minor complaint is the drive (from my home town Methven) is longer than the walk. But add on Lake Clearwater loop while you are out that way to make it worth the drive.
