This is a great easy trail run around these two beautiful Lakes. The whole Hakatere/Ashburton Lakes area is a trail running paradise and this run is a great intro to the area with stunning scenery and a flattish trail to warm up on.

If you camped beside Lake Camp run clockwise round the lake - it's a combination of gravel road and old 4x4 tracks and gravel track to The Lake Clearwater Huts. Run thru the village to the Lake edge (Lake Clearwater) then follow the track that goes around the entire lake. This is a mix of gravelled track and single track with the occasional boardwalk and bridge. There is some info along the way about the wildlife etc. Once back at the village carry on where you left off around Lake Camp.

Run around two alpine lakes with stunning views of Arrowsmith and Taylor Ranges and the Alps. Plenty of birdlife to spot on the Lakes.

No Public transport to here. Plenty of parking this is a safe area.

Moderate.

Pretty strait forward you should always see the lake to your right.

Very patchy.

Windproof jacket, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Map

Personally i wouldnt have a problem drinking from these Lakes however you do cross some clean streams on the North side of Lake Clearwater.

Very cold in winter with heavy frosts and snow. Hot in summer ...... just jump in the lakes !!

Staverley Store cafe
Staverley north of Mount Somers
The best Cafe in the area great food in a wounderful old store can get very busy as its reputation is well knowen.

Trail Reviews

Beautiful scenery & very runnable.
Easy to navigate & very quiet (in winter).
Sadly no dogs allowed at either Lake Camp or Clearwater.
Options to make it a longer looped run with trails to Lake Emma or Lake Mystery.

A great little loop - very scenic and runnable! Sadly no dogs allowed (as many obnoxiously large signs point out). Well worth the trip though! 👍

Driving the 90 minutes from Timaru to do this trail was well worth it. It was a beautiful autumn day and the scenery was spectacular, a great reminder of how good weve got it in this part of the world. Pretty good trail, bit tight in places but plenty of space to take alternative options if youre not sure of your footing. Dogs not allowed for some reason which is a real shame as its a great location if your 4 legged friend is well behaved
