Starting at the base of Mount Somers from the Staveley end. Park at the Sharplin Falls carpark.
The trail begins on the same trail as the Sharplin Falls track. Follow this track until you get a left hand branch of the trail to continue up Mount Somers rather than go to Sharplin Falls, about 1 km in.
From here the track is much more rugged and is a steep climb. Continue up the hill until you reach the turn off to the summit. Here is the turn around point where you can either go back down the hill to the carpark, head over the summit or continue around the mountain.
This route is to head back to the carpark at Staveley.
Sharplin Falls is a worthwhile stop off.
