The sign says dogs allowed but the DOC site says permit required. Email the local office - permits last 6 months.

Start by following the signs for the Lookout Track. This is a small out and back passing the toilet along the way. Once back near the beginning follow either of the signs for the Coastal Track. It doesn't matter which direction you go, you'll end up finishing back at the same spot.

The loop track and lookout track take in the views of Pelorus Sound, Mahau Sound and the Havelock Township. A nice place to stretch your legs on the way between Havelock and Picton.

If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.

There is usually plenty of parking available in the carpark.

Easy.

The main coastal track is an easy loop where you can't really go wrong. The Lookout track is an out and back with a few options but they all join back up.

Generally good.

Windproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

There is a toilet but no drinkable water.

Track can get slippery after either rain or very dry weather.

Take care of tree roots. Tracks in the Sounds often have small slips after bad weather.

Trail Reviews

Stunning wee journey breaker between Nelson and Picton. The bush is so lush on south side then quite different on northern side. Ran mid winter and not too slippy. Its beautifully shaded if you did it in summer. Gorgeous wee sneak views to sounds along the way.

You can get right around again but take care as the slips are still active.

Stunning views, loop closed due to having to navigate several large slips. Passable with caution currently.
