From the Aquatic Centre car park, follow the shell path through to the boardwalk through the mangroves. When you come off the boardwalk, turn left onto Ewing Road and continue to the end of the road. At the end of Ewing Road on the right hand side the track will take you up a flight of stairs to Vale Road. Turn left onto Vale and enter the trail in approx. 50m where there will be a shoe cleaning station for Kauri Dieback.
Follow the trail straight through and in about 3km you will come to the end of the Hatea River walk and another shoe cleaning station. Turn right and follow the road for about 1 km until you reach A H Reed Memorial Park on the left hand side of the road. Here there is car park, toilets and a water fountain. There is also another shoe cleaning station.
Follow the track left as currently the track to the right is closed. Keep left and follow the track through to Whangarei Heads Falls. At the falls there is a loop track so you can go either left or right over the water fall, back down onto the track and back to the Hatea River trail.
If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.
