A classic jaunt out to Aspiring Hut, which is new and improved as of 2023!

This run mostly follows a 4wd road with some sections of easy single track through the Mātukituki valley. There are spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

The altitude gain is mild, with only one significant hill in the middle, making it a nice easy training run. This trail can be done most of the year, but be aware that it doesn't get much sun in the wintertime and it can be hard to avoid getting your feet wet crossing side streams.

Aspiring Hut has running water and flushing toilets in the summer; tank water and a long-drop toilet in the winter. Sheep and cattle may be present on this track. Kea like to hang out at the hut, so keep your belongings under surveillance!

Views of Rob Roy Glacier.

If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.

Plenty of parking available at Raspberry Creek carpark, unfortunately no public transport.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Gloves, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map, Gaiters

Due to livestock in the area, it's best to bring your own water for this track. Only drink from the Matukituki if you're filtering or treating the water.

After a major rain, the fords in the road can be too high to get here. In good weather, the track is possible all year, just be aware that the valley gets little sun in the winter and it's hard to avoid getting wet feet in stream crossings.
