A 2km loop in a wonderful native bush setting, wide gravel trail with not too many tree roots, there are several variations that can be combined to make a longer run. This can also be combined with the Bushy Point run in the trail directory (Nan & Gramps) by running back towards Invercargill on Dunns Road (wide sealed road verge) and then right down Marama Ave South (shingle track off the road for most of the way). A distance of less than 2.5km.
Fantastic native bush block preserved in an otherwise urban setting. Lots of Wood Pigeon, Tui, and Bellbirds make their home in the Otatara Scenic Reserve.

Easy.
Only really one opportunity to take a wrong turn and this brings you out to Awarua Road a short distance away, no big distance to retrace your steps. You could start the trail from this location too, there just isn't as much parking.
Generally good.
Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Cellphone
Didn't see any tap for water but there is a toilet at the carpark so there may be water available, failing that there is a 4 Square across the road.
None that I can foresee.
Mind the odd tree root but in general this is a low risk run.

Have a break from driving on these 2 k's of shady goodness. And don't stumble over the birds!

Nice wee track. It is short but do a couple of loops to stretch it out. Good dense bush to hide from the sun in summer and get out of the wind and rain in winter.
Saw a kereru so it lived up to it's name.

Tall dense lush forest provides shelter from the wild wind and driving rain. Found myself serenaded by a cheerful Tui.
