Start at the upper carpark and take the Ram track which follows a ridge above the Ram stream down to the intersection with the Kaiauai Track. Turn left onto this track towards Pouakai Hut and cross the Waiwhakaiho River via the swing bridge. Shortly after the swing bridge take the Kokowai track which climbs steeply up the ridge above the stream. This track takes you up to the Holly Hut track which you turn left onto to head back towards North Egmont.
Great views of the Kokowai stream which is orange coloured from mineral deposits.

The lower mountain is always very muddy after rain and tracks are prone to damage after storms. The Holly Hut track can be hazardous during winter when snow/ice lies on the track.
The Ram track is signposted closed at the moment due to winter storm damage but its generally in ok condition typical of the lower mountain with some trees down on the track and one slip you need to be careful crossing.
There is also multiple slips on the route (including the large Boomerang Slip) to take care on when crossing.

A great loop, I went anti-cockwise in late June. The Kokowai is a bit overgrown, some gnarly roots. Awesome swing bridge! A little bit of ice up the top of the ridge and on Holly Hut track. Loved the down hill to finish.

This was AWESOME! Conditions were “adverse” but I was well prepared with plenty of layers and all recommended kit - I strongly recommend this because it was very exposed in certain parts. There was extreme rain overnight and during the run, which meant the “trail” was literally a river - 70/80% of trail underwater - so lots of fun just splashing through! (Wet, but not muddy, more rocky). I have family in the region and want to come back to run more trails if they’re like this. The swing bridge over the raging river was incredible. Waterfalls down, across, and over the trail! Was too wet to get the phone out for pics, which was a shame because it was spectacular. Keen to come back on a good day because the views will be different. Highly recommend!
