A great circumnavigation of Rough Island that works out nicely as a recovery run or beginner loop. It is easy to extend with the nearby Rabbit Island Route if wanting something a little more.
Navigation is pretty easy. GPX leads clockwise. Avoid roads unless no other options are available and keep to the fringes.
A small trail starts right from the parking area. At the west most point you will need to pick through a small piece of unmarked grassy area and you'll pop out at a parking area after a short while. From here follow the walking trail that will take you back east and towards the pines.
Near the main road, follow a small section of the 'Great Taste Trail' that will lead back to the start. Great to run near high tide - this makes it much more scenic. There may be a few small bits minorly under water, but should be able to jump over these!
If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.

Easy.

Generally good.

There are toilets where the loop picks up the Great Taste Trail, but possibly not drinking water.

A lot of happy dogs out and about! I took a post run swim at the near by Moturoa / Rabbit Island beach.

This was a perfect little recovery loop to try and get my legs moving again. Ran it in overcast mid summer weather which was perfect as it would have been roasting otherwise. The recent rain also kept most of the traffic n dust away. Suggest you keep to the forest route on the northern return instead of sticking quite as close to the fringes as I did which were below the high tide mark and rather slippery.
