Wairake Track starts on the south east side of Mt Karioi, and heads to the summit.
Follow the markers along a farm track for about 1.5km's, here the track veers right and up to meet the bush line. Proceed upwards following the markers until you reach the helicopter pad. The summit marker is a couple steps along. Proceed back the same way you came.
Note that the track does continue along the ridge and down the west side of the mountain.
This trail includes the peak Mount Karioi.
Karioi is 2.4 million year old extinct volcano.
Long drop at the trail start (500m from the road end). Otherwise public toilets in Raglan town (Cliff St & next to the i-site).
There is room for parking at the end of Karioi Road. Parking is on the left hand side of the long drop.

Really nice trail and the easiest way to get to the top of the maunga. Farm track is good to run back down, and the bush is lovely so long as your don't mind it a bit technical. Make sure you take in the fabulous views 😍. The gate is closed these days, so you need to park on Karioi Rd, about 500m from the loo & official trail head.. for a bonus gravel road section, which is also relatively good running ⛰️💕

Muddy, steep, overgrown, rooty! But bloody fantastic!! Done as part of Raglan Karioi Trail Race, the uphill is a bit of a grunt but descending is phenomenal!!

I highly recommend doing this as part of the Karioi Trail Run. Fantastic views.
