Depending on where you start (beach or visitor centre), follow the signs for the Trig Track - a technical track which is very steep in places. After a couple of km, it joins the main Wilkinson track. Turn left here and follow it up to the summit of Tūteremoana where on a clear day from the look out you will get spectacular views. Once you've done sightseeing and hung out with the friendly weka, return down Wilkinson Track to Rangatira Bay and south past the visitor centre to the beach where you started. Note - you can only run this loop clockwise as the Trig Track is uphill only.
This trail includes the peak Tuteremoana.
Kapiti Island is a beautiful, predator-free bird sanctuary and, from the moment you step onto the island, you'll feel like you've arrived in Jurassic Park with a cacophony of birdsong. You'll be able to get up close and personal with rare birds such as kākā, kōkako, takahē and hihi, and you can learn about the rich heritage of the island, which was once a very successful whaling station.
