The Gentle Annie trail has been maintained by Volunteers from the Kumara Junction community group. In 2024 they have laid new gravel and updated the signs and track markers to make this easier to follow.

Follow the cycle trail from the Angler access carpark on the Northern end of the Taramakau bridge. Run along the bridge, but instead of following this trail under the bridge, turn down the gravel path on the left. It is marked with 2x wooden bollards. This is the start of the Gentle Annie track. The track is well-maintained and marked, so you won't get lost. It has some small steep hills but is mostly a gentle gradient. It offers great views of the Taramakau River and serpentine beach.

The track continues for approximately 3km, then joins River Road at the Serpentine settlement. From here follow the gravel road to Serpentine Beach. You could extend the run by adding on a beach run. Otherwise, you can turn back the way you came.

The gravel road is privately owned but the owners have consented to runners and bikers being able to use the road to connect the Gentle Annie track to the beach. There will occasionally be farm vehicles (utes, tractors, bikes) on the road. Please give way to these.

Native bush - River views - Access to Serpentine beach.

No toilets on the route.

Start from the Angler Access carpark at the Northern end of the Taramakua bridge. there is plenty of space to park, please check you are not blocking off angler access to the river when you park.
